Chapter 7 - THE OLD ACCUSATION

Sarah stopped crying.
She went completely still.
"Take the blame for what?"
Daniel knew before she finished asking.
Six months earlier, Owen had gotten sick after spending an afternoon with Evelyn.
Vomiting. Dizziness. A night in urgent care.
The doctor had called it a stomach virus.
Evelyn had spent the next week telling relatives that Sarah fed the boy "junk" and never watched him properly.
Daniel remembered defending his mother.
Not loudly.
That was worse.
He had said, She's worried. Don't take it personally.
Sarah looked at him now.
"That wasn't a virus, was it?"
Daniel could not answer.
Officer Brooks asked, "Was there another unexplained medical event?"
Sarah nodded.
"Two."
Daniel turned toward her.
"Two?"
"There was another one you don't know about."
The room seemed to shrink.
Sarah told them about a Saturday in January when Owen had come home from Evelyn's house unusually sleepy. She had called Evelyn, who said he was exhausted from playing outside.
"I didn't tell you because every conversation about your mother turned into an argument," Sarah said.
Daniel absorbed the words like blows.
He had spent years believing silence kept the peace.
Instead, silence had given Evelyn room.
Brooks requested Owen's old medical records and documented the dates.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
Marcus again.
"You need to hear this," his brother said.
"What happened?"
"Mom just called me. She doesn't know I'm talking to you."
Marcus's voice dropped.
"She told me Sarah has been drugging Owen for months."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
May you like
Marcus continued.
"And she says she has proof."
