Chapter 17 - THE KEY

State investigators replayed the recording until every word was logged.
"The boy becomes the key."
It did not prove anyone caused Henry's death.
It proved something else: the plan to control Owen's trust existed before Henry died.
Judge Keene was located that night at a private airfield thirty miles away.
He had two suitcases and a passport.
He never reached the plane.
Meanwhile, Evelyn's story changed again.
She now claimed Daniel had misunderstood her confession.
She said she had only added a harmless herbal powder to Owen's tea.
The lab ended that argument.
The substance in the glass matched the medication detected in Owen's blood.
Then investigators searched Evelyn's purse.
Inside a hidden zippered pocket they found another white envelope.
Daniel did not need to know what was in it.
The lab would decide.
At 3:15 a.m., Dr. Patel finally smiled when she entered Owen's room.
"He's doing well. If his next labs look good, he can go home tomorrow."
Sarah cried with relief.
Daniel sat beside his son and watched him sleep.
For the first time in two days, the room felt still.
Then Owen opened his eyes.
"Dad?"
"Yeah, buddy?"
"Grandma had another glass."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
"She made one for Mom too."
Sarah stopped moving.
May you like
Owen pointed toward her.
"But Mom never drank it."
