Chapter 16 - BROTHERS

Daniel found Marcus in the hospital parking garage.
"Where were you the night Dad died?"
Marcus stopped walking.
That was enough.
"You knew she would say something," Daniel said.
Marcus looked exhausted.
"I was at the house."
"You told me you were in Chicago."
"I lied."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Why?"
Marcus rubbed both hands over his face.
"Dad called me. He said Mom and Keene were pressuring him. I drove over. They were arguing. Dad had chest pain. I wanted to call an ambulance. Mom said he was being dramatic."
Daniel's stomach turned.
"What happened?"
"I called anyway. Dad collapsed before they arrived."
"And then?"
"Mom made me promise not to tell anyone Keene had been there. She said the scandal would destroy the family."
Daniel laughed without humor.
"We really loved that sentence, didn't we? Protect the family."
Marcus looked at him.
"I was scared."
"So was Sarah. So was Owen. Everybody was scared except Mom."
Marcus reached into his pocket.
"There's something else."
He handed Daniel an old phone.
"I recorded part of the argument because Dad told me to. I never listened to it again."
The audio was rough, but Henry's voice was clear.
Then Evelyn's.
Then Judge Keene's.

And finally a sentence that made Daniel stop breathing.
Keene said, "Once Henry is gone, the boy becomes the key."
