Chapter 15 - THE DEAL

Judge Keene stopped answering his phone.
By evening, state investigators were involved.
Evelyn's attorney arrived at the police station demanding that everything be treated as a civil family dispute.
Nobody listened.
The forged trust amendment, Caroline's statement, the camera video, and Owen's toxicology report had changed the shape of the case.
Daniel sat beside Sarah in Owen's hospital room when Detective Ramos called.
"Your mother wants to speak with you."
"No."
"She says she'll explain why she did it."
Sarah looked at Daniel.
"Don't go for her. Go for Owen."
An hour later, Daniel sat across from Evelyn in an interview room separated by a scratched metal table.
She looked smaller without the patio, the diamonds, the audience.
Still, she smiled when he entered.
"You finally came to your senses."
"Why Owen?"
"I was saving him."
"From what?"
"From Sarah. From your weakness. From watching everything your father built disappear."
Daniel stared at her.
"You drugged an eight-year-old."
Her jaw tightened.
"I gave him something to make him sleepy. I knew he would recover."
Daniel kept his face still.
She had just admitted it.
Evelyn realized too late.
Her eyes shifted toward the wall.
"You're recording this."
"The police are."
She leaned back.
Then her expression changed.
"Fine. You want the truth? Ask Marcus where he was the night your father died."
Before Daniel left the interview room, Evelyn leaned forward and tried one last familiar weapon.
"Sarah will leave you when this is over," she said. "Marcus already betrayed you. Owen will grow up afraid of you because you let strangers tear this family apart. When that happens, remember I warned you."
A year earlier, those words would have stayed in Daniel's head for weeks.
Now he saw them for what they were: doors she wanted him to walk through.
Guilt. Fear. Doubt. Shame.
He stood.

"You don't get to tell me what family means anymore."
For the first time since he entered the room, Evelyn had no answer ready.
