Chapter 14 - THE CAMERA THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

The study camera was not part of Daniel's home system.

It belonged to Henry.

Marcus remembered it after reading the letter: a tiny motion camera hidden inside an antique clock because Henry had suspected employees were entering his office.

The clock was still in Evelyn's house.

Detective Ramos obtained a warrant.

By late afternoon, police were searching the property.

Evelyn stood on the front lawn in sunglasses, telling neighbors this was a "family misunderstanding."

The antique clock was gone.

But its memory card was not.

An officer found the card taped beneath the bottom drawer of Henry's desk.

The footage was three years old.

Most of it showed an empty room.

Then they reached the week before Henry died.

Judge Keene entered the study with Evelyn.

Henry followed, visibly angry.

There was audio.

"I said no," Henry told them. "Owen's money stays protected."

Evelyn answered, "You're embarrassing me."

Keene placed papers on the desk.

"Sign and this ends quietly."

Henry pushed them away.

"Get out of my house. Both of you."

The video ended when all three left the room.

No crime.

No confession.

But then Marcus noticed the timestamp.

There was another recording forty minutes later.

Only Evelyn returned.

She carried the unsigned papers.

And a practice pad covered with Henry's signature.

The detectives enlarged the old study footage frame by frame. On the desk beside Evelyn sat three blank sheets and a page covered with repeated signatures. Some were shaky. Others looked almost perfect.

Marcus stared at the screen. "Dad practiced his signature when his hand hurt after surgery. Mom used to tease him about it."

"Or learned from it," Daniel said.

A forensic document examiner later compared the forged trust amendment with the practice sheet. The pressure patterns were wrong. The spacing was too careful. Whoever signed Henry's name had copied the shape without understanding his natural motion.

For years Evelyn had depended on people seeing a familiar name and not looking closer.

Now everyone was looking closer.
