Chapter 6 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

They watched the video in a small consultation room with the door locked.

At 1:47 p.m., Evelyn walked to the drink table alone.

She checked the patio.

Then she opened her purse.

The white envelope appeared exactly as Owen had described it.

Sarah grabbed Daniel's hand.

Onscreen, Evelyn poured something from the envelope into one glass, stirred it, and placed that glass at Owen's usual seat.

No one spoke.

The timestamp kept moving.

Two minutes later, Owen came outside.

Evelyn intercepted him before he reached the other children.

The camera had no audio, but her gestures were clear. Sit. Drink.

Owen shook his head.

She pushed the glass toward him again.

He took a reluctant sip.

Then another under her watch.

Officer Brooks paused the video.

"I'm preserving this immediately."

Daniel felt sick.

Sarah was crying now, silently.

"Why?" she whispered. "Why would she do this to him?"

Daniel did not have an answer.

But the video was not over.

Brooks resumed playback.

At 1:55 p.m., Evelyn stepped away from Owen and made a phone call.

She walked toward the pantry door, close enough to the camera that her face filled the frame.

Her lips were visible.

Marcus, still connected by video call, leaned toward his screen.

"I can read part of that."

"What?"

"She says, 'It's done.'"

Then Evelyn turned slightly.

Her next words were even clearer.

"Now we wait for Sarah to take the blame."
