Chapter 1 - THE KITCHEN FLOOR

Daniel Reed heard his daughter before he saw her.

“Daddy! Daddy, please!”

His office bag hit the hallway floor.

He ran toward the kitchen and stopped so hard his shoulder struck the doorframe.

Six-year-old Lily was on her knees beside the island, crying as she picked pieces of chicken and rice from the tile with her fingers.

Claire stood three feet away with her phone raised.

Margaret, Claire’s mother, watched from the breakfast table.

Daniel’s face went cold.

“What are you doing to my daughter?”

Claire lowered the phone.

“She threw her dinner.”

Lily shook her head violently.

“No, Daddy.”

Daniel crossed the room and lifted her into his arms.

She wrapped herself around his neck so tightly he could barely breathe.

“I’m here,” he whispered.

“You’re safe now.”

Claire stepped forward.

“She kicked me first.”

Lily buried her face against Daniel’s shoulder.

“She’s lying.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

Claire’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

“Daniel, don’t let a six-year-old manipulate you.”

Lily trembled.

Then she whispered the sentence that changed the room.

“She always does it when you go to work.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Margaret finally stood.

“She’s upset.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?”

Margaret said nothing.

That silence answered him.

Daniel pulled out his phone and called 911.

Claire’s confidence disappeared.

“Are you serious?”

“Completely.”

Minutes later, two officers separated the adults.

Lily refused to let go of Daniel.

As Claire was led toward the front door, she twisted around.

“You have no idea what she’s been doing to me.”

Daniel started to answer.

Then one officer picked Claire’s phone up from the counter.

The screen was still recording.

And the video timer showed forty-seven minutes.
