Chapter 9 - THREE DAYS

Claire had been planning to file for emergency custody on Friday.

The trust transfer was scheduled for Monday.

Daniel finally saw the shape of the plan.

Make him look dangerous.

Take Lily.

Move the money.

Leave before he understood what happened.

But one thing did not fit.

Why torment Lily?

Why risk everything with videos of cruelty?

Detective Chen had an answer.

“Control.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Claire needed Lily frightened enough to repeat whatever story she was given.”

The idea made him furious.

At the temporary custody hearing, Claire appeared by video from the county detention center.

Her lawyer argued the kitchen incident was an isolated lapse caused by stress.

Then the prosecutor played thirty seconds from the hidden camera.

Claire’s lawyer stopped talking.

Margaret refused to testify.

Daniel received temporary sole custody and a no-contact order.

Outside the courtroom, a reporter called his name.

He ignored her.

Then another person approached.

A woman in a gray coat.

“Mr. Reed?”

Daniel stepped in front of Lily.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Natalie Shaw.”

She looked at Lily, then quickly away.

“I knew Claire before you did.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Natalie handed him an old photograph.

Claire was twenty-one in it.

Margaret stood beside her.

Between them was a little boy.

“Who is that?” Daniel asked.

Natalie swallowed.

“My son.”

Daniel looked up.

“What does this have to do with Lily?”

Natalie’s face hardened.

“Because Margaret taught Claire how to do this years ago.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What do you mean, this?”

May you like

Natalie pointed toward the courthouse.

“How to make a child look unstable so adults will believe the mother instead.”
