Chapter 13 - THE RED SUITCASE

The red suitcase was not in Margaret’s house.
It was in a rented storage unit twenty miles away.
Inside were clothes for Claire and Lily.
Cash.
Two prepaid phones.
Copies of Lily’s medical records.
And plane tickets for Friday night.
The destination was Belize City.
Daniel stared at the tickets.
Claire had been planning to leave the country with his daughter.
Or Margaret had been planning it for her.
Detective Chen opened a side pocket.
She pulled out a small stuffed rabbit.
Lily recognized it immediately.
“Bunny.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I thought you lost this.”
“Grandma said Bunny ran away because I tell secrets.”
Daniel had to turn away.
The suitcase also contained a notarized letter granting Margaret temporary authority over Lily’s medical care.
Daniel’s signature was forged again.
The plan was becoming undeniable.
Friday morning, emergency custody.
Friday night, flight.
Monday, money transfer.
By the time Daniel challenged anything, Lily would be gone.
Then investigators found one more item beneath the lining.
A tiny digital recorder.
It contained a conversation between Claire and Margaret at the storage unit.
Claire sounded frightened.
I’m not taking her out of the country.
Margaret answered:
You will if you want me to keep quiet.
Claire said:
Daniel will never stop looking.
Margaret replied:
That’s why he needs to believe Lily is afraid of him.
A pause followed.
Then Claire whispered:
What if she tells him the truth?
Margaret’s answer was calm.
Then we make sure he never gets her alone long enough to listen.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
For the first time, he understood why Lily had been punished whenever she asked for him.

They were not only hurting her.
They were training her to stop reaching for the one person who might believe her.
