Chapter 10 - THE FIRST CHILD

Natalie’s son, Evan, was fifteen now.

When he was six, Claire had briefly worked as his after-school caregiver.

Margaret lived nearby.

Natalie said odd things started happening almost immediately.

Evan began apologizing for accidents he had not caused.

He stopped eating around adults.

He begged not to be left alone with Claire.

Natalie fired her after finding Evan locked in a laundry room.

She reported it.

Nothing came of the complaint.

Claire claimed Evan had locked himself in during a tantrum.

Margaret backed her up.

Daniel’s anger became something colder.

“Why didn’t this show up in a background check?”

“Because no charges were filed.”

Natalie looked ashamed.

“And because I let myself be convinced I was overreacting.”

She handed Detective Chen a folder she had kept for nine years.

Inside were copies of emails.

One message from Margaret to Claire made the room go silent.

Children tell the truth badly.

Adults tell lies confidently.

Remember that.

Daniel stared at those two sentences.

This was not a bad afternoon.

It was a method.

That evening, Lily finally asked why her mother was not home.

Daniel sat beside her on the couch.

“Because she did things that were not safe.”

“Is she mad at me?”

“No.”

“She says this always happens because I make people mad.”

Daniel took her hand.

“That is not true.”

Lily watched him carefully.

Then she whispered:

“Grandma said if I made Mommy lose me, you would lose your job too.”

Daniel frowned.

“My job?”

Lily nodded.

“She said she had papers.”

“What papers?”

Lily pointed upstairs.

“In your office.”

Daniel ran to the study.

His locked file drawer was open.

And his employment contract was gone.
