Chapter 12 - CLAIRE WANTED OUT

The recording did not make Claire innocent.

It made everything more complicated.

Margaret’s voice came first.

You’re too soft with her.

Claire answered:

She’s six, Mom.

This has gone far enough.

Margaret laughed.

Now you care?

Claire sounded exhausted.

I said I’d help with the account.

I never agreed to keep doing this to Lily.

Daniel shut his eyes.

Claire had known.

Claire had participated.

But Margaret had been pushing harder.

Then the recording turned darker.

Margaret said:

You walk away now, and I give Daniel everything.

The fundraiser.

The Harper property.

Evan.

All of it.

Claire whispered:

You’d ruin me.

Margaret replied:

I made you.

Daniel opened his eyes.

Detective Chen paused the audio.

“This helps explain pressure.”

“It does not excuse what Claire did.”

“I know.”

Daniel’s voice was flat.

“She could have called me.”

“Yes.”

“She could have taken Lily and walked out.”

“Yes.”

“She filmed my child crying.”

Chen nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel appreciated that she did not soften it.

Later, Claire’s attorney requested a controlled interview.

Daniel refused to attend.

Then Claire sent one sentence through the lawyer.

Ask Lily about the red suitcase before my mother gets bail.

Daniel’s pulse jumped.

He found Lily coloring in the family room.

“Sweetheart, do you know a red suitcase?”

Her crayon stopped.

She looked toward the garage.

“Grandma’s?”

“Yes.”

Lily whispered:

“She says that’s where she keeps the new life.”

Daniel felt cold.

May you like

“What new life?”

“The one where you don’t know where we live.”
