Chapter 18 - CLAIRE’S LAST RECORDING

The final memory card contained one video.
Claire sat alone in the kitchen.
The timestamp was five days before Daniel caught Lily on the floor.
She looked exhausted.
Her eyes were swollen.
“If Daniel sees this, then I either told the truth too late or I never found the courage.”
Daniel watched without moving.
Claire admitted everything.
She admitted Margaret introduced her to Daniel because of the Harper property.
She admitted she initially treated the marriage like a way to repair an old family grievance.
Then she said something Daniel did not expect.
“I fell in love with you anyway.”
He felt no comfort from it.
Claire continued.
“And I loved Lily.”
Daniel almost shut the video off.
Then Claire started crying.
“But loving someone does not erase what you do to them.”
She confessed that Margaret slowly convinced her Lily needed to be controlled to keep the custody plan believable.
She confessed she participated.
She confessed she knew it was abuse long before she admitted the word to herself.
“I kept waiting for one last day.”
“One last recording.”
“One last transfer.”
“Then I would stop.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“That is the lie people tell when they want to stay innocent while doing something cruel.”
Daniel’s anger did not disappear.
But the recording gave prosecutors a complete confession.
At the end, Claire said:
“Daniel, if you ever let Lily hear one thing from me, let it be this.”
The screen went black for a second.
Then Claire returned.
“None of this was her fault.”
May you like
Daniel closed his eyes.
The next day, Claire changed her plea.
