Chapter 20 - A DIFFERENT KITCHEN

One year later, the kitchen looked completely different.

The old tile was gone.

The dark pantry wall was gone.

The hidden room had been opened into a bright reading nook with shelves, pillows, and a small yellow lamp Lily chose herself.

Daniel had considered selling the house.

Lily asked to stay.

“I want it to know we won,” she said.

So they stayed.

Daniel changed jobs and stopped traveling overnight.

Not because fear controlled him.

Because he wanted a different life.

Lily was seven now.

She still saw Dr. Patel.

She still had hard days.

Sometimes she asked questions about Claire.

Daniel answered honestly without asking Lily to carry adult guilt.

Claire sent letters through her attorney.

Most remained unopened.

One day, Lily might choose differently.

That choice would belong to Lily.

Mr. Alvarez came over for Sunday lunch sometimes.

He never stopped apologizing for waiting too long.

Daniel eventually told him something he had learned himself.

“You spoke when it mattered.”

Alvarez shook his head.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

“So should a lot of us.”

That afternoon, Lily dropped a strawberry on the kitchen floor.

She froze.

Daniel saw it happen.

The old fear flashed across her face.

He picked up the strawberry and tossed it in the trash.

Then he handed her another one.

“That’s all?” she asked.

“That’s all.”

Lily smiled.

Then she deliberately dropped the new strawberry.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

She giggled.

He started laughing too.

Soon she was laughing so hard she had to hold the counter.

A year earlier, that floor had been the place where Daniel finally saw the truth.

Now it was just a floor.

May you like

Nothing more.

And for Lily, that was the victory.
