Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s BargainVanessa asked for a deal.

Full cooperation.

Reduced charges.

She would give them Marcus.

Adrian almost laughed.

“You know where he is?”

“No.”

“Then what are you giving?”

“A place.”

She described a hunting property in Vermont owned through a shell company.

Marcus had used it before.

Police searched.

Empty.

But recently occupied.

They found burner phones.

Food.

A laptop wiped badly.

Forensics recovered messages.

Marcus to Vanessa:

Make Maria look dangerous.

Marcus to Luis:

Keep Adrian emotional.

Marcus to unknown:

If Elena talks, contingency.

That last message dated the day before Elena died.

Unknown recipient.

Harris traced it.

A former executive protection officer named Owen Shaw.

Adrian knew him.

He had hired Owen years earlier.

Then fired him after Elena complained he made her uncomfortable.

Owen now worked overseas.

Or claimed to.

Entry records showed he had returned to the U.S. six days before Elena’s crash.

Another piece.

Another betrayal.

Adrian asked Vanessa:

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“For once, I believe you.”

She cried.

He felt nothing.

Not satisfaction.

Not pity.

Just distance.

Vanessa whispered:

“I loved you.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You loved access.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You dropped my son.”

She closed her eyes.

No answer could survive that sentence.

Then police found Marcus’s laptop in Vermont.

One recovered file contained Elena’s entire hidden investigation.

She had been closer than anyone knew.

At the bottom was a scheduled email.

Never sent.

To Adrian.

Subject:

IF I DON’T COME HOME.

The attachment opened.

Elena’s final letter began:

May you like

Adrian, Marcus is not after my money.

He is after yours.
