Chapter 9 - The PhoneElena’s phone powered on.

No passcode.

Someone had reset it.

Most data was erased.

But one deleted audio file was recovered.

Elena’s voice.

Then Marcus.

They were arguing.

“You moved the money.”

Marcus said:

“I moved risk.”

“You stole from sick children.”

“Do not become dramatic.”

“I’m going to Adrian.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to tell me no.”

A long silence.

Then Marcus:

“If you bring Adrian into this, everything changes.”

Elena laughed.

“That’s the point.”

Marcus’s voice became colder.

“You have a child now.”

The recording ended.

Adrian nearly crushed the phone in his hand.

Threat.

Not proof of murder.

But close enough to reopen questions.

Detective Harris reviewed Elena’s crash file.

One detail stood out.

Brake-line failure had been considered.

Then dismissed as post-impact damage.

The car had been scrapped.

Except it had not.

The insurer sold the wreck to an auction yard.

It still existed.

Adrian and police visited.

The mechanic found evidence the brake line had been cut before impact.

Clean tool marks.

Elena’s death was no longer just an accident.

Vanessa was questioned again.

She admitted Marcus asked her to monitor Elena.

Admitted she accessed Elena’s office.

Admitted the foundation theft.

But denied touching the car.

“Marcus said Elena was unstable.”

Maria whispered:

“He always makes other people carry the ugly part.”

Then Harris found a service invoice.

Elena’s car had been inspected two days before the crash.

Mechanic listed:

May you like

Luis Romero.

Vanessa’s former driver.
