Chapter 18 - The TrialThe trials took months.

Marcus first.

Financial conspiracy.

Obstruction.

Charges tied to Elena’s death.

Witness tampering.

He was convicted.

Owen and Luis received reduced sentences for cooperation but still faced years.

Thomas pleaded guilty.

Vanessa’s case drew the most media attention because of the balcony video.

Adrian hated that clip becoming public.

People replayed the worst second of Oliver’s life for entertainment.

His lawyers fought to limit release.

Some footage still leaked.

Headlines called Maria a hero.

She hated that too.

“I caught a baby.”

“You saved him.”

“I caught him because an adult dropped him.”

She refused interviews.

Good.

Vanessa pleaded guilty before trial.

At sentencing, she asked to speak.

She looked at Adrian.

“I was jealous of a dead woman.”

The room stayed silent.

“She knew what I was before you did.”

Adrian did not react.

“I wanted her life. Her house. Her place beside you.”

Then Vanessa looked at Maria.

“And I hated that you were the one person Elena trusted more than me.”

Maria looked down.

Vanessa cried.

“I told myself the balcony was a performance.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“But when I opened my hands, I knew I was risking him.”

There.

Truth.

Late.

But truth.

She received a substantial sentence.

Adrian felt no victory.

Justice is not restoration.

Elena stayed dead.

Oliver still woke crying some nights.

Maria’s shoulder still hurt in cold weather.

Then Daniel—Elena’s brother—returned to Adrian’s life.

They had years to repair.

One evening Daniel said:

“Elena was afraid you’d forgive Marcus because you loved him like a brother.”

Adrian stared.

“She underestimated me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He smiled sadly.

“She knew how hard truth was for you when it came wearing a familiar face.”

Adrian had no answer.
