Chapter 6 - Marcus ValeMarcus arrived twenty minutes later.

Too fast.
Security stopped him at the gate.
Adrian went outside.
Marcus looked worried.
Perfectly worried.
“What happened?”
“You tell me.”
“What?”
“Why did you know?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Rosa called.”
Rosa had not.
Adrian said nothing.
Marcus changed the story.
“Fine. One of the guards.”
“Which one?”
Marcus smiled weakly.
“Adrian, what is this?”
Adrian handed him a printed transfer record.
Marcus read it.
His expression barely changed.
That was the problem.
“You recognize it?”
“It looks like foundation accounting.”
“You handled those accounts.”
“My team did.”
“Vanessa says you built the vendor network.”
Marcus laughed.
“You’re believing Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“I’m believing documents.”
Marcus looked toward the mansion.
“Where’s Oliver?”
Adrian’s skin went cold.
“Why?”
“Because I’m concerned.”
“You asked about him before asking about me.”
Marcus blinked.
“Of course.”
“Why?”
“We’re family.”
No.
They were close.
That was not the same.
Then Maria came outside.
Marcus saw her.
His face changed.
Tiny.
But enough.
Maria whispered:
“You were at the hospital.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“The night Elena died.”
Marcus stared at her.
“I came after.”
“No.”
Maria’s voice shook.
“You were there before Adrian.”
Adrian looked at Marcus.
The accident happened at 11:40 p.m.
Police called Adrian after midnight.
Marcus supposedly arrived at 1:15.
Maria said:
“I saw you leaving the emergency entrance at 12:20.”
Marcus stepped backward.
“You’re confused.”
“I remember your coat.”
Then Marcus said something that destroyed his own story.
“Elena was already dead when I got there.”
Adrian went still.
No public notification had been made by 12:20.

Maria whispered:
“How did you know?”
