Chapter 17 - The ConfessionMarcus did not confess immediately.

He negotiated.

Then Owen testified.

Luis testified.

Thomas testified.

Vanessa testified.

The financial records spoke louder than all of them.

Finally Marcus admitted the fraud.

Admitted ordering surveillance.

Admitted telling Luis to damage the brakes.

But he refused the word kill.

“I wanted her scared.”

Adrian watched from behind the glass.

Harris asked:

“And when Owen told you she was breathing?”

Marcus looked down.

“What did you say?”

Silence.

Harris repeated it.

Marcus finally whispered:

“I told him to leave.”

That was enough.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Elena had been abandoned because rescue might expose the plot.

Marcus continued:

“I thought ambulance response would be fast.”

Harris stared.

“You gambled her life.”

No answer.

The murder case became stronger.

So did the financial case.

Vanessa accepted responsibility for the balcony incident and fraud.

Her lawyer argued she never intended Oliver to hit the floor.

The video made intent complicated.

But child endangerment was not.

Maria gave a statement.

No revenge.

Just facts.

Adrian testified too.

Then came the question he dreaded.

Why did you trust Vanessa after Elena died?

He answered:

“Because she made grief easier.”

The courtroom went quiet.

He continued.

“And I confused easier with safe.”

That was the truth.

After court, Maria asked:

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

She nodded.

Good answer.

Then Adrian handed her the USB.

“What?”

“Keep it.”

She shook her head.

“No more secrets.”

He looked at it.

Then broke the plastic shell in half.

The evidence had already been copied.

The symbol mattered.

May you like

Maria smiled sadly.

“Better.”
