Chapter 1 - THE DOOR OPENED

“MOMMY, PLEASE STOP!”

Daniel Hart heard his six-year-old daughter scream before he even got the front door all the way open.

Lily was on the hardwood floor in the hallway, crying so hard she could barely breathe. Melissa had both hands locked around the back of Lily’s sweater and was dragging her toward the laundry room.

“Please! I’ll be good! I promise!” Lily sobbed.

Daniel’s briefcase slipped from his hand and hit the floor.

Melissa spun around.

Her face changed instantly.

“Daniel—”

He crossed the room in three strides. “Let go of her.”

“I can explain.”

“Let. Go.”

Something in his voice made Melissa release the sweater.

Daniel dropped to his knees, pulled Lily against his chest, and felt her whole body shaking. Her knees were red from the floor. One sleeve had been stretched almost to the shoulder.

He looked at his wife. “What the hell are you doing?”

Melissa lifted both hands. “I’m training her.”

“Training her for what?”

“She threw another fit. I was teaching her consequences.”

Lily buried her face against Daniel’s neck.

Melissa pointed toward the kitchen. “She dumped her lunch. She screamed at me. She kicked the cabinet. You never see this side of her because you’re never here.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Then Lily lifted her wet face.

“She’s lying.”

Melissa’s eyes flashed. “Lily.”

The little girl flinched.

Daniel felt it.

He turned Lily gently toward him. “Baby, look at me. Tell me what you mean.”

Her bottom lip trembled.

“She does it every time you go to the office.”

Melissa took one sharp step forward. “That is not true.”

Daniel stood with Lily in his arms and reached for his phone.

Melissa’s voice rose. “You are not calling the police over a tantrum.”

“Yes,” Daniel said. “I am.”

Melissa kept talking. Daniel barely heard her.

He was listening to Lily breathe.

As the officers placed Melissa in handcuffs, Lily tugged weakly at his collar.

“Daddy?”

“I’m right here.”

She leaned close enough that only he could hear.

“There’s something else.”

Daniel looked down.

Lily whispered, “Mommy makes me drink the sleepy medicine before you come home.”

And suddenly, the dragging wasn’t the worst thing in the room anymore.
