Chapter 19 - WHAT DANIEL MISSED

It showed a family livestream from six months earlier.
Daniel remembered it.
Melissa had asked him to sit beside Lily and talk about “how hard the last few months had been.”
In the video, Lily sat between them, pale and quiet.
At one point, she reached for Daniel’s hand.
He squeezed it.
Then his phone rang.
He stood up and left the frame.
The moment he disappeared, Melissa leaned toward Lily.
Her smile stayed perfectly in place.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Cry now.”
Lily whispered, “I can’t.”
Melissa pinched the inside of Lily’s arm below the camera line.
Lily cried.
“I was right there.”
Maya said nothing.
“I was right there.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I didn’t look.”
Late that afternoon, he sat with Lily under the hospital courtyard trees.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
She looked confused. “For what?”
“For not seeing sooner.”
Lily picked at a leaf.
“You were working.”
He shook his head. “Work is not more important than you.”
She leaned against his arm.
“Are you going back to the office?”
“Someday.”
“Tomorrow?”
“No.”
She thought about that.
“Good.”
Three months later, prosecutors charged Evan, Melissa, Grant, Dr. Kline, and Marcus Vale in overlapping cases involving fraud, conspiracy, child endangerment, attempted murder, and financial crimes. Carol took a plea for her role in moving money and hiding evidence.
The morning of Melissa’s preliminary hearing, Daniel brought Lily to his sister’s house instead of court.
He refused to let her become a spectacle.
Before he left, Lily handed him a folded drawing.
It showed two people standing in front of their house.
Daniel and Lily.
No Melissa.
At the bottom she had written, in shaky first-grade letters:
HOME IS WHERE NOBODY IS SCARED.
Daniel folded the paper carefully.

Then his lawyer called.
“Daniel, Melissa wants to plead guilty.”
