Chapter 7 - STRONG MAMA

Someone posted a statement on Melissa’s social accounts claiming she was the victim of a controlling husband using police influence to “silence a mother advocating for her sick child.”

Millions of followers saw it.

Daniel watched comments pour in.

Monster.

Rich men always win.

Believe mothers.

Where is Lily?

“They’re using her name.”

“I know.”

“They’re making Lily a hashtag.”

“I know.”

Maya held his gaze. “Those accounts are evidence. Let them talk.”

The police obtained warrants for financial records tied to Vance Family Media. Money from charity campaigns had been routed through shell companies, then paid to Grant, Melissa, and a consulting firm linked to Dr. Kline.

The charity had raised over $1.8 million in eighteen months.

Less than eight percent had gone to families in need.

Daniel’s hands shook when he saw the number.

At the hospital, a child interviewer spoke with Lily privately.

When she came out, her face was grim.

“Mr. Hart, Lily says her mother rehearsed symptoms with her.”

Daniel looked away.

“She was told to say her stomach hurt. To act sleepy. To cry if a camera was on.”

“Why?”

“She says Mommy told her they needed money because Daddy was going to leave them.”

Daniel whispered, “I was never leaving.”

The interviewer nodded. “I know.”

Then she added, “Lily also mentioned a room in your basement.”

Daniel frowned. “We don’t have a finished basement.”

“She calls it the blue room.”

His blood went cold.

There was an old utility room behind the wine storage. Melissa kept it locked and told him the pipes were dangerous.

Daniel called Ramirez.

Police met him at the house.

They broke the lock.

Inside were lights.

A camera.

A child-sized chair.

Boxes of unopened donated toys.

Stacks of letters addressed to Lily from strangers.

And on the far wall, taped beside a whiteboard, was a calendar.

One date was circled in red.

FRIDAY — FINAL EVENT.
