Chapter 4 - THE MAN CALLED G

Daniel read the message twice.

He won’t be around.

Officer Ramirez took the phone from the detective. “Who is G?”

Carol looked at the floor.

Daniel knew before she said anything.

“Grant,” he whispered.

Melissa’s older brother.

Ramirez asked, “Where is he?”

Carol shook her head. “I don’t know.”

“You’d better start knowing things,” Daniel said.

She glared at him. “Don’t threaten me in my own house.”

“I’m not threatening you. I’m trying to understand why your daughter was drugging my child and telling your son I wouldn’t be around.”

“Grant handles the business,” she whispered.

“What business?”

“Melissa’s sponsorships. The charity. The content.”

“Did you know Lily was being hurt?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was being medicated for videos?”

Carol looked away.

Daniel stepped closer. “Look at me.”

Ramirez raised a hand. “Mr. Hart.”

Carol finally whispered, “I thought it was something the doctor approved.”

“She said Lily needed to be calm before filming.”

His eyes opened.

“Calm?”

Carol began crying. “I didn’t ask enough questions.”

“No,” Daniel said quietly. “You didn’t.”

A second officer entered from the back room carrying a laptop.

“Found this in the guest room.”

The laptop contained contract drafts, payment records, and a schedule for a major livestream fundraiser planned for Friday night.

The event was called SAVE LILY’S FUTURE.

Goal: one million dollars.

Daniel stared at the title until the words blurred.

“They were going to raise money using my daughter.”

Ramirez nodded. “Looks that way.”

Then the detective opened one more file.

It was a scanned insurance document.

Daniel’s name appeared at the top.

Life insurance: five million dollars.

Beneficiary: Melissa Hart.

Policy amended three weeks earlier.

Daniel’s heart started hammering.

“I never signed that.”

The detective zoomed in on the signature.

It looked exactly like his.

And beneath it was a scheduled medical exam Daniel had never requested.
