Chapter 2 - THE PURPLE CUP

Daniel stared at his daughter.
“What medicine?”
Lily pointed toward the kitchen with one trembling finger. “The purple one.”
“Lily is confused,” she said quickly. “It’s allergy medicine. She has trouble sleeping.”
Daniel’s head snapped toward her. “You never told me she was taking anything.”
“Because you’re at work fourteen hours a day.”
One of the officers, a woman named Ramirez, stepped between them. “Sir, don’t touch anything. We’ll secure the kitchen.”
An ambulance was called.
At the hospital, Daniel sat beside Lily’s bed while a pediatric doctor asked simple questions in a quiet voice.
“Does Mommy give you medicine every day?”
“Not every day.”
“When does she give it to you?”
Lily thought hard. “When people are coming. Or when we go to the doctor. Or when I’m supposed to look tired.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
“Look tired for who?” he asked.
The doctor glanced at him, warning him not to lead her.
Lily answered anyway.
“For Mommy’s videos.”
Daniel went cold.
Melissa had built a huge online following over the previous year. Her account, Strong Mama Melissa, was supposed to be about parenting, wellness, and “raising a medically complicated child with courage.” Daniel hated the phrase, but Melissa insisted Lily’s stomachaches and exhaustion were real.
Now he remembered the photographs: Lily under blankets. Lily in waiting rooms. Lily asleep beside captions about bravery.
A nurse came in carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a bottle recovered from their kitchen cabinet.
The label had been peeled away.
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
Officer Ramirez entered behind her.
“Mr. Hart, we need to ask you something.”
“Ask.”
“Your wife says you knew about the medication.”
“I didn’t.”
“She says you approved the videos too.”
“I approved family updates. I did not approve drugging my daughter.”
Ramirez studied him. “We’re going to verify all of that.”
Daniel nodded. “Good.”
Then Lily spoke from the bed.
“Daddy?”
He took her hand.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Mommy has another phone.”
Daniel looked at Ramirez.
May you like
Lily swallowed.
“She keeps it in Grandma’s house.”
