Chapter 6 - THE EMPTY BED

Room 412 was empty.
His heart slammed against his ribs.
“Where is my daughter?”
A nurse turned pale. “She was just here.”
Police locked down the floor.
Daniel called Lily’s name until his throat hurt.
Then Officer Ramirez came out of the stairwell with Lily in her arms.
“She’s okay.”
Lily reached for him. “Daddy!”
He pulled her tight.
Ramirez explained that a woman wearing hospital scrubs had entered Lily’s room and told her they were going for a test. Lily became scared and ran into the stairwell.
“Did you see her face?” Ramirez asked.
Lily nodded against Daniel’s shoulder.
“Was it Mommy?”
“No.”
“Grandma?”
“No.”
“Someone you know?”
Lily hesitated.
“She came to our house before.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“When?”
“When Mommy was making videos.”
But Omar called twenty minutes later with another discovery.
“The photo texted to you wasn’t taken by the woman,” he said.
“How do you know?”
“Metadata. Different device. Different angle. Somebody else was watching the room remotely.”
“From where?”
“I traced the upload through three relays. Final connection came from Hart Systems.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Evan.”
“Maybe. But there’s more.”
Omar sent a security camera still from the executive garage taken that morning.
It showed Evan getting into a black SUV.
The passenger was Grant Vance.
Daniel stared at the image.
His best friend and his brother-in-law.
Together.
Then a third man stepped into frame.
Daniel recognized him instantly.
Dr. Stephen Kline.
Lily’s pediatric specialist.
The doctor who had spent a year telling Daniel that his daughter’s strange fatigue was “probably stress.”
The doctor who had signed every medical letter Melissa used online.
And suddenly Daniel understood the size of the lie.

It wasn’t one mother hiding abuse.
It was a business.
