Chapter 18 - MELISSA’S ENVELOPE

“What did you mail?” he asked.

She looked at her attorney.

“Melissa.”

Finally she whispered, “A package.”

“To who?”

“A reporter.”

“What was in it?”

“Videos. Financial files. Messages.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against Evan?”

“Against everyone.”

Daniel stared at her.

Melissa began crying again. “I thought if things went bad, I could trade the files for immunity.”

“You mailed private footage of Lily to a reporter?”

“I blurred her face.”

“That is not the point.”

“Where did you send it?”

Melissa gave them the name of an investigative journalist, Rachel Boone.

Maya called immediately.

Rachel answered.

“Yes, I received a package.”

“Have you published anything?”

“No.”

“Have you copied the videos?”

“I copied documents for verification. I did not distribute footage of the child.”

Rachel agreed to meet police and surrender the original material under subpoena.

But she had already verified enough to know the conspiracy was bigger than the criminal case.

Several Hart Systems directors had accepted favors from Evan.

Dr. Kline had billed insurers for treatments Lily never received.

A marketing agency had knowingly scripted fake medical appeals.

The scandal broke nationally the next morning.

Not as a story about a “bad mother.”

As a story about an industry that turned a child’s fear into revenue.

Sponsors dropped accounts.

Regulators opened investigations.

Hart Systems stock fell twelve percent before trading was halted.

Daniel stood in the hospital playroom watching Lily color a picture of a dog.

Maya entered quietly.

“The board wants you to make a statement.”

“No.”

“They need leadership.”

“My daughter needs a father.”

Maya studied him, then nodded.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Rachel Boone.

There is one video you need to see before the prosecutors do.

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at the phone.

May you like

The video had been recorded six months earlier.

And in the first frame, Daniel himself was sitting beside Melissa.
