Chapter 13 - MY FATHER WAS ALSO BEING USED

Dad's neurologist confirmed early cognitive decline.
Nothing severe enough to erase responsibility.
But enough to make him anxious, suspicious, and easier to manipulate.
Marcus repeatedly told him the Bennett legacy would disappear unless he acted quickly.
Elaine reinforced it.
They fed his oldest fear.
Losing control.
Rachel found contract amendments Dad signed during that period transferring management rights to Marcus's holding company.
Marcus had been taking the company while convincing Dad he was saving it.
The party served two purposes.
Remove me from Lily's trust.
And keep Dad focused on a family crisis while Marcus secured corporate control.
My father had hurt my child.
And been robbed at the same time.
Both things could be true.
Lily found me reading the medical report.
"Was Grandpa sick?"
I looked at her.
"Yes."
"Did that make him mean?"
I struggled.
"It may have made him more afraid."
"Same thing?"
"No."
She waited.
I added, "Being scared doesn't give you permission to hurt people."
She nodded.
Then asked, "Did he love me?"
That was worse.
"I think he did."
"Then why did he do it?"
I had no perfect answer.
"Sometimes adults love people and still make terrible choices."
Lily hugged her stuffed fox.
"That's dumb."
"Very."
She left.
I sat alone.
Then Nora called.
"There's a problem."
"What now?"
"One of Elaine's files shows somebody warned Harold not to do the party."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
The email had come from an anonymous address.
STOP USING THE CHILD. YOU ARE BEING PLAYED.
Dad replied:
Too late.
Then the anonymous sender answered:
THEN I WILL MAKE SURE LIAM FINDS THE VIDEO.
I stared at the words.
Someone inside the plan had wanted me to discover the truth.
Not six years later.
Immediately.
"Who sent it?"
Nora said, "We're tracing it."
By midnight, they had an answer.
The account had been created from Victoria's mother's home.
Evelyn Shaw had not only written an affidavit.
She had planted the first copy of the evidence.
But if she wanted me to find it then, why had I never received it?

The answer was in one final delivery receipt.
Package refused by Harold Bennett.
