Chapter 2 - WHAT THEY NEEDED

I played the message three times.

The voice belonged to my father.

Harold Bennett.

The same man who had spent my entire childhood telling me family loyalty mattered more than anything.

"Once he loses his temper," Dad said on the recording, "we document it."

A second voice answered.

Marcus.

"And the child?"

"She only needs to be upset long enough to make him react."

My hands started shaking.

I called Detective Nora Hayes, the officer who had responded to the mansion six years earlier.

Two hours later, Nora sat at my kitchen table watching the footage frame by frame.

"You kept this?"

"No. My father did."

"Why was it in his bag?"

"He died last year."

She paused the video.

Marcus stood beside the camera rig holding a clipboard.

On the paper was a handwritten schedule.

7:20 — start game.

7:32 — call Liam.

7:47 — front gate alert.

7:50 — reaction.

Nora looked at me.

"They predicted when you'd arrive."

"I changed my flight."

"Who knew?"

"My father."

"And he told them."

Nora zoomed in on another frame.

A woman stood near the fireplace.

Not Victoria.

My Aunt Elaine.

She was holding Lily's winter coat.

"Why is that important?" I asked.

"Look at the pocket."

A small black device was clipped inside.

Microphone.

They had wired my daughter.

Then Nora found another angle.

Marcus had positioned a camera directly toward the doorway.

Not at Lily.

At me.

"They wanted your face," she said.

"For what?"

Nora didn't answer immediately.

Then she opened the old incident report.

According to Victoria's statement that night, I had entered "aggressively," threatened several relatives, and "attempted to assault Marcus."

I had never touched him.

But the video they submitted to police ended six seconds after I walked in.

The new footage continued.

And it showed exactly who attacked first.

Marcus.

He had swung at me.

I blocked him.

That part had been cut.

Nora looked at me.

"Somebody wasn't documenting a prank."

"What were they documenting?"

She turned one page.

"Your fitness as a parent."
