Chapter 14 - THE PACKAGE MY FATHER STOPPED

Evelyn had mailed me a package two days after the party.
Inside was a copy of the video.
The affidavit.
The guardianship draft.
And a letter.
My father intercepted it at his office.
The courier log showed his signature.
He never gave it to me.
Instead, he placed the video in his travel bag.
Why?
No one knew.
Nora found one more clue.
A voice memo recorded by Dad three weeks after the party.
He sounded tired.
"Liam will hate me."
Pause.
"He should."
Another pause.
"Marcus says we did what was necessary."
Then my father's voice broke.
"But Margaret would have taken Lily and left every one of us."
He knew.
At some point, he knew.
The recording ended with:
"I kept the card. If I lose track of things, somebody needs to find it."
Liam Jr. had.
Six years later.
I listened to the memo alone.
For the first time since Dad died, I cried for him.
Not because he was innocent.
Because he had become the kind of man he used to warn me about.
A man so afraid of losing control that he destroyed what he wanted to protect.
The board froze transactions tied to Marcus's holding company.
Lily's six-percent voting block became critical.
Rachel asked me how I intended to vote it.
"I don't."
She frowned.
"You're Lily's guardian."
"Then we find an independent fiduciary."
"You can legally vote."
"I know."
That was why I refused.
My father had spent years treating Lily's inheritance as family power.
I would not repeat that mistake just because my intentions felt better.
Lily's trust appointed an independent corporate trustee for the vote.
Marcus lost control.
Bennett Development entered restructuring.
Then prosecutors called.
Victoria had asked to meet me.
She said there was one thing about the party she had never admitted.
Something Lily still did not know.
I almost refused.

Then she said:
"It happened before you walked in. And Marcus told me never to tell you."
