Chapter 20 - THE MESSAGE INSIDE THE VIDEO

Two months later, the case closed.
Bennett Development moved on without our family.
So did we.
One Sunday, Lily asked me the question I had expected for years.
"Why did Grandpa do it?"
We were sitting at the kitchen island.
She was eating cereal.
"He was afraid of losing something he thought made our family important."
"The company?"
"Yes."
"Was it important?"
"Not as important as you."
She nodded.
"Did he know that?"
"I think part of him did."
"Then why didn't he stop?"
I looked at her.
"Because knowing the right thing and doing it are different."
She accepted that.
Then she asked, "Do you forgive him?"
I thought about the hidden inhaler.
The staged party.
The bruise.
The guardianship petition.
The voice memo.
The memory card he kept.
"I don't know."
"Is that okay?"
"Yes."
She crunched another spoonful.
"Good."
That night, I opened the final evidence transcript one last time.
The hidden pre-party message began with Dad saying:
If Liam reacts the way we expect, we finally have what we need.
For months, that sentence had haunted me.
Then I read the rest.
Marcus asked, "And if he doesn't react?"
Dad answered:
"Then maybe I've been wrong about him."
I had never noticed that before.
Maybe because anger only lets you hear the part that hurts.
My father expected me to fail.
Marcus needed me to fail.
Victoria helped manufacture the moment.
Elaine planned to profit from it.
And Lily?
She only needed me to come home.
I did.
Late.
Angry.
Too loud.
But I came.
That fact did not erase what she endured.
But it gave us somewhere to begin.
It was that a room full of adults looked at a frightened five-year-old and decided her fear was useful.
I listen.
Before the cameras.
Before the paperwork.
Before the scream.
And I come back.
May you like
Every time.
