Chapter 19 - THE PARTY SHE CHOSE

Lily turned twelve in the backyard.
No ballroom, no hidden cameras, no forced games, no relatives deciding what memory she should have.
She wanted pizza, a projector, four friends, and a giant blanket fort.
"That's it?" I asked.
"And tacos."
"Obviously."
Liam Jr. helped string lights across the patio.
He had grown taller than me and enjoyed reminding me.
When the first guests arrived, Lily stopped at the door.
For a second, I saw the five-year-old again.
Small.
Alert.
Checking the room.
I walked over.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
Then shook her head.
"Can the front door stay unlocked?"
My first instinct was security.
Then I remembered.
"Yes."
"All night?"
"All night."
She relaxed.
Small thing.
Huge thing.
Later, one friend suggested tying another kid to a chair during a party game.
Nothing cruel.
Just a silly challenge.
Lily went silent.
Before I could speak, she said, "No tying people."
Her friend shrugged.
"Okay."
That was it.
No explanation required.
No adult debate.
No one told her she was too sensitive.
The game changed.
I watched from across the yard and felt something shift inside me.
Listening did not always require a dramatic rescue.
Sometimes it meant believing a simple no.
After cake, Lily gave me an envelope.
Inside was a printed still from the old party video.
I almost dropped it.
The image showed me in the doorway, face twisted with anger.
But Lily had drawn over it.
A speech bubble above my head said:
I CAME BACK.
I looked at her.
"Why did you make this?"
"Because that's what I remember now."
My eyes filled.
She rolled hers.
"Don't cry. It's my birthday."
I laughed.
Then she hugged me.
Behind us, Liam Jr. turned off the projector.
May you like
The screen went dark.
For once, darkness did not mean someone was hiding something.
