Chapter 18 - THE HEARING

Marcus eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges tied to fraud, conspiracy, evidence manipulation, and child endangerment.
Elaine received a reduced sentence after cooperating.
Victoria's case ended with a plea that included supervised restrictions and a permanent no-contact order with Lily.
At the sentencing hearing, Marcus asked to speak.
I almost left.
Then he looked directly at me.
"We thought you were predictable."
The judge told him to address the court.
He continued anyway.
"You always came running when Lily cried."
I stared back.
"You were right," I said quietly.
Nora, beside me, whispered, "Don't."
So I stopped.
Marcus's statement continued.
He blamed Dad's dementia.
Elaine's greed.
Victoria's insecurity.
The company.
The trust.
Pressure.
Legacy.
He had an explanation for everything.
The judge listened.
Then said, "You keep describing reasons as though they erase choices."
That sentence stayed with me.
Outside court, reporters waited.
I gave no statement.
Neither did Lily.
Her story did not belong to strangers because adults had turned it into a case.
We drove home.
At dinner, Lily asked if the judge was scary.
"A little."
"Did he yell?"
"No."
"Then how do people know he's serious?"
I smiled.
"Apparently you don't have to yell."
She gave me a look.
"Told you."
I laughed.
That night, Rachel emailed the final corporate vote.
Lily's independent trustee had voted against Marcus's ownership group.
Bennett Development would be sold to an employee-backed investment consortium.
The Bennett family would no longer control it.
Then Lily came into my office holding a sheet of paper.
"What is that?"
"A party plan."
My stomach clenched before I could stop it.
She smiled.
"My birthday."
