Chapter 13 - The Black Sedan

Detective Chen reached for her radio.
The black sedan remained parked across the street.
"Stay away from the windows," she said.
Mara moved beside Camila instinctively.
For the first time, mother and daughter stood shoulder to shoulder.
A patrol car arrived.
The sedan pulled away before officers could block it.
They caught the plate on a traffic camera.
Registered owner: an Alvarez Holdings subsidiary.
Sofia felt sick.
"Rafael still has people working for him."
Camila sat at Evelyn's dining table, hands wrapped around a mug she wasn't drinking from.
"There was a second ledger," she said suddenly.
Everyone looked at her.
"What?" Sofia asked.
Camila pressed fingers to her temple. "The red one showed transfers. The black one showed why. Names. Bribes. Properties. Judges? Maybe not judges. I can't—"
"Don't force it," Mara said.
Camila looked at her daughter, surprised by the gentleness.
"I hid it before I escaped."
"Where?"
Camila stared at the table.
"Behind something blue."
Sofia's mind jumped to the locked room.
"The blue door?"
Camila shook her head. "No. Smaller."
Evelyn brought out a box Teresa had left with her years earlier.
Inside were photographs, birthday cards never mailed, and a child's drawing.
Mara unfolded it.
A house stood under a yellow sun. One window was colored bright blue.
Camila gasped.
"The dollhouse."
Sofia remembered it at once.
Their grandfather had built a huge wooden dollhouse for Camila when she was ten. After she vanished, Rafael ordered the servants to move it into storage.
"It's still at the mansion," Sofia said.
Detective Chen frowned. "If there's evidence there, we recover it with a warrant."
Camila gripped Sofia's hand.
"Go before Rafael does."
Sofia's phone vibrated.
A security alert from the mansion.
