Chapter 15 - Owen's Second Lie
Detective Chen found Owen at his apartment before noon.
This time, she brought him to the station.
Sofia, Mara, and Camila watched through the interview-room glass.
Owen looked twenty years older than he had the night before.
Chen placed a photocopy of the ledger entry on the table.
"You were paid before Camila disappeared."
Owen stared at it.
"I didn't know he planned to hurt her."
"But you knew he planned to remove her."
Owen rubbed both hands over his face.
"He said we were taking her to a private clinic because she was unstable. I believed what I wanted to believe because he was paying me more money than I'd ever seen."
Behind the glass, Mara whispered, "He keeps turning choices into accidents."
Camila's eyes stayed on Owen.
Chen continued. "Who drove the second car?"
Owen looked up sharply.
Sofia felt Camila stiffen.
"There were two?" Chen asked.
Owen's silence answered her.
Finally he said, "Rafael wasn't driving."
Sofia's skin went cold.
"Then who was?"
Owen looked directly toward the one-way glass, as if he knew they were behind it.
"Elena."
Mara turned toward Sofia.
Camila made a sound like the air had left her lungs.
"No," Sofia said.
But Elena's earlier story came back to her.
We got Camila out.
I begged her not to go.
Then the crash.
Detective Chen opened the interview-room door and stepped out.
"Where is Elena now?"
Sofia checked her phone.
Three missed calls from her mother.
Then a text received two minutes earlier.
I need to tell you the truth before someone else does.
Meet me at the chapel.
Come alone.
Sofia showed Chen.
Chen shook her head. "You're not going alone."
