Chapter 18 - What Was Under the Blue Room
By afternoon, firefighters had contained the chapel fire.
The mansion was untouched.
Daniel examined the remote with a bomb technician and discovered it controlled an old motorized mechanism, not an explosive.
The label led them back to the blue room.
Sofia stood in the doorway with Mara and Camila.
Twenty-four hours earlier, the room had been a grave for questions.
Now it felt like a witness.
Daniel pressed the remote.
A section of the floor beneath the desk shifted with a deep mechanical groan.
A narrow staircase appeared.
Mara stared down into darkness.
"Of course there's another room."
Sofia almost laughed from exhaustion.
They descended with police.
At the bottom was a concrete storage chamber.
Shelves lined the walls.
Boxes were labeled with dates, names, and company accounts.
Rafael's private archive.
But Camila ignored the money records.
She walked toward a small table in the corner.
On it sat a video camera, a stack of mini-DV tapes, and an old monitor.
One tape was labeled CAMILA - 10/17/06.
Daniel inserted it.
The footage showed the north hallway twenty years earlier.
Nineteen-year-old Camila appeared on-screen, visibly pregnant, carrying the red ledger.
Rafael stepped into frame.
There was no audio at first.
Then the microphone picked up his voice.
"Give me the book and I'll let you leave."
Camila backed away.
"You don't get to steal from everyone and call it protecting the family."
Rafael moved closer.
Then Elena appeared on the recording.
She stepped between them.
"Run, Camila."
The image shook as someone struck the camera mount.
Camila disappeared through the blue door.
Rafael followed.
The tape ended.
Mara looked at Elena.
For the first time, the truth was not one person's memory against another's.
It was recorded.
Detective Chen opened another box.
Inside were dozens of forged documents.
On top was a file bearing Sofia's name.
The same false records Rafael had threatened Elena with twenty years earlier.
Sofia whispered, "He kept the evidence of his own threat."
Camila looked around the room.
"Men like Rafael don't keep secrets because they're careful," she said. "They keep them because they think they'll always be the one in control."
