Chapter 20 - The Door Stayed Open

Six months later, the blue door was still open.

Sofia refused to let anyone close it.

Rafael's office became a legal archive for investigators and trust auditors. The stolen money that could be recovered was returned. Owen testified in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Elena testified too.

She did not ask Sofia to forgive her.

That mattered.

Rafael eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges after prosecutors showed his lawyers the hidden-room footage, the ledgers, the forged documents, and the records he had tried to burn.

Camila moved into a small cottage near Evelyn rather than the mansion.

She said she wanted windows she could open herself.

Mara visited every week.

They learned each other slowly, sometimes through long talks and sometimes through silence.

One Sunday afternoon, Sofia found Mara in the blue room sitting at the old desk.

The silver music box played softly between them.

"You keeping it?" Sofia asked.

Mara shook her head. "It belongs to her."

Camila appeared in the doorway.

"Actually," she said, "I hated that thing by the time I was sixteen. Sofia played it every morning just to annoy me."

Sofia laughed.

For a second, Camila laughed too.

The sound hit Sofia harder than tears.

Nothing could return the years they had lost, but the past no longer belonged to Rafael.

Mara walked to the hallway and looked at the blue door.

"Grandma said someone would recognize me."

Sofia joined her.

"She knew I would."

"Why?"

Sofia touched the white streak above Mara's temple.

"Because the first time Camila walked into this house at twelve years old, I thought she was the strangest girl I'd ever seen. Five minutes later, she stole my dessert and blamed the dog. You have the same smile she made when she lied about it."

Mara laughed.

Then she looked down the long hallway that had once frightened her.

"What happens to this place now?"

Sofia thought about the locked rooms, the burned records, the lies told at dinner tables in voices calm enough to sound true.

"We stop treating silence like loyalty."

Camila stepped beside them.

Mara took her hand.

Behind them, the blue door remained wide open.

And this time, nobody reached to close it.
