Chapter 16 - The Chapel

The family chapel stood on the eastern edge of the estate, separated from the mansion by a field of dry grass.
Police approached from the road.
Sofia went through the side cemetery with Detective Chen ten yards behind her.
Inside, Elena sat in the first pew.
Rafael stood near the altar.
He held no weapon.
That somehow made the scene worse.
"Mom," Sofia said.
Elena turned. Her face was wet with tears.
"I drove the second car."
Sofia stopped.
Rafael smiled faintly.
"Finally."
Elena looked at him with disgust. "Don't enjoy this."
She faced Sofia again.
"I wasn't chasing Camila. I was following Rafael because I knew he was going after her. Owen's car was in front. Rafael was with me. He forced me to drive because his license had been suspended after a DUI and he didn't want police connecting him to the road."
Rafael laughed. "Convenient."
"He grabbed the wheel," Elena said. "He tried to force Owen closer to Camila's car. I fought him. We swerved. Camila saw us in the mirror, panicked, and lost control."
Sofia felt sick.
"Why didn't you tell police?"
"Because Rafael threatened you."
The words echoed through the chapel.
Elena's voice broke. "You were sixteen. He said if I talked, he would make sure you were charged in the trust theft using accounts opened in your name. I knew he could do it because he'd already forged signatures. I was a coward. I chose silence."
Rafael stepped forward. "And now she wants absolution."
Mara's voice came from the doorway.
"No. She wants the truth on record."
Everyone turned.
Mara stood beside Camila and Daniel.
Camila walked slowly down the aisle.
Rafael's confidence vanished.
"You," he whispered.
Camila stopped ten feet away.
"Yes. Me."
Rafael backed toward the altar.
Then his hand darted beneath a cloth-covered side table.
He pulled out a small remote.
Daniel shouted, "Don't press that!"
Rafael smiled.

"You should have let the past stay buried."
His thumb came down.
