Chapter 8 - The Library Door Was Locked From the Outside

Sofia entered through the kitchen service door with Mara and Daniel behind her.
"Mom?"
No answer.
They reached the library.
The door would not open.
Daniel looked at the lock. "Keyed from the outside."
Sofia grabbed a brass fireplace tool and struck the old latch twice. Wood splintered.
They forced the door open.
Elena sat on the floor beside the desk, shaken but conscious.
"He took the tape," she said.
Sofia knelt beside her. "Did he hurt you?"
"He shoved me when I tried to stop him. I'm fine."
Mara scanned the room. "Where did he go?"
Elena pointed toward the portrait of Sofia's grandfather.
Daniel pulled it away from the wall.
Behind it was a narrow door.
"Another passage," Mara whispered.
Elena closed her eyes. "This house was built during Prohibition. Half the walls are hollow. Rafael knew every route."
Sofia stared at her mother. "You knew too."
"Some. Not all."
"What else haven't you told me?"
Elena looked at Mara.
"The night Camila escaped, she didn't go alone."
Mara went still.
"Teresa was with her?"
"Yes. And so was I."
Sofia stood. "You said Teresa came to you afterward."
"I lied."
The admission landed harder than Sofia expected.
Elena continued. "We got Camila out through the north passage. She was terrified Rafael would find her before the baby was born. We arranged a cabin. New documents. Cash."
"Then what happened?"
"After Mara was born, Camila decided she couldn't keep hiding. She wanted to go to federal investigators with the ledger copies. Teresa begged her to wait. I begged her too. She left anyway."
Mara's voice cracked. "And the crash?"
"I learned about it later. By then the woman in the article had disappeared from the rehabilitation center."
A sound came from behind the hidden door.
One footstep.
Then another.
Someone was inside the wall.
May you like
Daniel switched off the library lights.
The hidden latch began to turn.
