Chapter 11 - The Best Man

Police traced Nolan's call to an abandoned office park near the airport.

They found him alive in a storage room, wrists zip-tied, with a bruise across his temple.

He had missed his flight because Sloane called him back.

"She said Victor was coming for everyone who knew too much," Nolan told Ruiz from a hospital bed.

Graham stood near the door, too angry to sit.

"Tell me exactly what you did."

Nolan closed his eyes.

He admitted stealing Graham's digital signature file.

He admitted giving Sloane the house alarm code.

He admitted helping create the false trust amendment.

"Why?"

"I stole from your company."

Graham went still.

Nolan had hidden a six-hundred-thousand-dollar embezzlement through vendor accounts. Victor Mercer discovered it and offered him a choice: prison, or cooperation.

"So you sold my daughter to save yourself."

Nolan began crying.

"I told myself it was paperwork. I told myself Hawthorne was a school. Then I saw the restraint plan. I tried to back out."

"Too late."

Nolan nodded.

He gave Ruiz a password to a cloud folder Sloane had used.

Inside were draft guardianship petitions, falsified medical records, and payment projections showing how much Hawthorne Ridge expected to collect from Maisie's trust over ten years.

More than twelve million dollars.

Then Sam found a separate folder labeled JG.

Julia Grant.

Inside was a scanned copy of her original audit notes.

The last page contained one handwritten sentence:

Sloane knows what Victor did. She is afraid of him, but fear does not make her safe.

Graham stared at Julia's handwriting.

Ruiz scrolled farther.

There was an audio file recorded the night before Julia died.

And the first voice on it belonged to Sloane.
