Chapter 16 - The Lake House

Police reached the Mercer lake house before sunset.

Graham stayed behind the perimeter until Ruiz gave permission for him to enter.

The basement smelled of dust and old cork.

Behind the wine rack, investigators found a wall safe.

Inside were cash, passports, a handgun, and three encrypted drives.

One drive contained audio files.

Julia's voice filled the basement.

"You cannot bury every parent who asks questions, Victor."

Victor Mercer answered calmly.

"No. Only the ones who mistake courage for leverage."

"If anything happens to me, copies go out."

"Then I hope you drive carefully tomorrow. That hill road is dangerous in rain."

Graham stopped breathing.

The recording did not capture Victor ordering a mechanic to damage a car.

But combined with the payment marked ROAD RESOLUTION, Nolan's statement, and Luis Ortega's identification, it transformed an old accident into an active homicide investigation.

Ruiz shut off the audio.

"This is enough to keep digging."

A detective upstairs shouted her name.

They ran up.

A second vehicle had entered the property through the rear service gate.

Victor had not been alone in running the operation.

Dr. Elliot Crane stepped from the car carrying a metal case.

When he saw police, he turned to flee.

Officers tackled him near the dock.

The metal case burst open.

Inside were blank medical certification forms already signed by Crane.

Dozens of them.

One bore Graham's name.

Another bore Ava Grant's.

Graham stared at his sister.

Ava whispered, "Why me?"

Sam answered before anyone else could.

"Because if Graham was declared incompetent, you were the next person who could challenge the trust transfer."

They had planned to remove the whole family, one signature at a time.
