Chapter 19 - The Promise

Graham did not give Maisie an easy answer.
"Maybe someday," he said. "But nobody comes into this family unless you feel safe too."
Maisie frowned. "I don't get to pick your girlfriend."
Despite everything, he laughed.
"No. You definitely do not."
She smiled.
Then he grew serious.
"But you always get to tell me when something feels wrong. And I promise I will listen the first time."
That promise became the center of their new life.
Graham put an independent professional trustee beside himself on Maisie's trust so no future spouse could control it alone.
Ava became Maisie's emergency guardian.
June stayed with the family, though Graham doubled her vacation time after she threatened to quit if he doubled her salary again.
Maisie began seeing a child therapist who never forced her to discuss the wedding until she was ready.
For weeks she refused to wear dresses.
Then one morning she chose a yellow one for kindergarten picture day.
Graham said nothing about it.
He only told her she looked happy.
The investigation into Hawthorne Ridge expanded. Several families recovered money. Former patients came forward. State officials shut the center down permanently.
Julia's audit work was credited publicly with helping expose the scheme.
Graham hated that she had paid for courage with her life.
But he was proud that her work still protected children she had never met.
On the anniversary of Julia's death, Sam Pike arrived at the restored family home carrying a small sealed box.
"Julia left this with me too," he said.
Graham stared at him.
"You had another secret?"
Sam smiled sadly.
"Not a dangerous one."
