Chapter 20 - Home

Maisie opened Julia's box at the kitchen table after pancakes.

Inside was no evidence.

No warning.

No legal document.

There was a small silver bracelet, a photograph of Julia holding newborn Maisie, and a handwritten letter.

Graham read it aloud because Maisie asked him to.

Julia had written about ordinary things.

How Maisie hated socks as a baby.

How she laughed whenever Graham sneezed.

How being loved did not mean being protected from every hard thing, but it did mean always having somewhere safe to return.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

Never let anyone convince you that your place in this family can be taken away.

Graham's voice broke.

Maisie touched the paper.

"Mommy knew?"

"She knew you were worth protecting."

Later that afternoon, they hung Julia's photograph beside the staircase in the restored house.

Not hidden behind a suitcase.

Not treated like something a new marriage needed to erase.

A year had passed since the wedding that never happened.

Sloane eventually pleaded guilty to several charges and testified against Victor. Her cooperation reduced her sentence, but it did not erase what she had done.

Victor's case moved toward trial alongside the reopened investigation into Julia's death.

Graham stopped measuring justice by how much suffering returned to the people who had caused it.

He measured it by simpler things.

Maisie sleeping through the night.

Her medicine staying where it belonged.

Her bedroom door never being locked from the outside.

Her laughter filling the kitchen again.

One evening, she found Graham in the garage holding the small evidence bag containing the chain police had finally returned.

"Why do you still have that?" she asked.

Graham looked at it for a long moment.

Then he dropped it into a locked storage box meant for the case files.

"Because it belongs to what happened," he said. "Not to us."

Maisie slipped her hand into his.

"Can we go home now?"

May you like

He smiled.

They were already there.
