Chapter 13 - Hawthorne Ridge

Ruiz yanked Graham backward as the SUV jumped the curb.

The vehicle missed Sloane by less than six feet, clipped a stone planter, and tore across the grass toward the service road.

Police units followed.

Sloane dropped to her knees.

For the first time since Graham had known her, she looked truly terrified.

"Victor came for the ledgers," she said.

Graham did not comfort her.

"You chained my daughter."

Sloane looked away.

"I know."

"You drugged her."

"Crane said it was safe."

"She is five."

Sloane flinched.

Ruiz took the hard drive and placed Sloane in handcuffs.

"You can explain the rest downtown."

Firefighters contained the records-room fire before it reached the locked cabinets.

Inside, investigators found files for dozens of children from wealthy families.

Each file included psychological language far more severe than the actual diagnoses.

Each family had a trust, estate, or insurance structure capable of paying enormous residential fees.

Maisie's file was different.

It had been created before Sloane and Graham were engaged.

Graham stared at the date.

"She started this before I proposed."

Sam nodded grimly.

Then Ruiz pulled a second file from the cabinet.

GRANT, JULIA.

It was not a patient file.

It was a surveillance file.

Photographs of Julia leaving meetings.

Copies of her emails.

A map of the road where she died.

And a payment authorization dated the morning of her crash.

The recipient line contained one name.

VICTOR MERCER.

The purpose field contained only two words.

ROAD RESOLUTION.
