Chapter 5 - The Trust Barrier

Nolan did not answer his phone.

By noon, police had located his car at the airport parking garage.

His passport was gone.

"He ran," Ava said.

Sam shook his head. "Or someone wants us to think he did."

They moved into Graham's home office, where Sam opened the trust Julia had created after Maisie's birth.

Graham had signed it five years earlier without thinking much beyond college funds and protection.

Now every sentence felt dangerous.

Maisie owned a future interest worth more than forty million dollars, including shares Julia had inherited from her family.

Graham was the sole trustee while she was a minor.

"So Sloane couldn't touch it," Graham said.

"Not directly," Sam replied. "But read Section Nine."

If Graham became medically incapacitated, a legally recognized spouse could petition to become co-trustee for Maisie's care.

If Maisie required long-term residential treatment, trust funds could pay the institution managing her care.

Graham looked up slowly.

"Hawthorne Ridge could bill her trust."

"Millions over time."

Ava swore under her breath.

Sam opened another document recovered from the wedding suitcase.

It was a draft amendment naming Sloane as successor trustee.

Again, Graham's signature had been forged.

"They needed the marriage first," Graham said.

"Yes. The wedding made her legally useful. The placement made Maisie financially useful."

Graham's stomach turned.

Then Sam noticed a medical attachment.

It was not about Maisie.

It was about Graham.

A physician had certified that he suffered from unresolved grief, impaired judgment, and episodic dissociation.

"I have never seen this doctor," Graham said.

Sam tapped the signature line.

DR. ELLIOT CRANE.

Ruiz looked at the date.

"Two weeks ago."

Ava stared at her brother.

"They weren't only trying to remove Maisie."

Graham felt the room tilt.

The plan required him to become legally powerless too.
