Chapter 17 - The Last Person They Needed

Crane talked within twelve hours.
He had signed false evaluations for years in exchange for payments routed through Mercer companies.
He admitted preparing documents for Graham and Ava.
He also admitted something worse.
Sloane's marriage was only Phase One.
If Graham refused to sign the trust amendment, the drugged champagne would create a public medical episode at the reception. Crane would certify temporary incapacity. Sloane, as the new spouse, would petition for emergency authority.
If Ava objected, a second report would claim she had substance-abuse issues based on fabricated lab paperwork.
Maisie would already be at Hawthorne Ridge.
"It was designed to happen in hours," Ruiz told Graham. "Before anyone could compare notes."
Graham looked through the conference-room window at Maisie drawing with Ava.
"They planned my whole family like a checklist."
"Yes."
Nolan signed a cooperation agreement and surrendered financial records linking Victor to the scheme.
Sloane also began cooperating, though prosecutors made no promise about her sentence.
The center's license was suspended.
Families from across three states began calling investigators.
Then Sam brought Graham one final document recovered from Victor's laptop.
A draft public statement.
It was supposed to be released after the wedding.
Graham Grant, overwhelmed by grief and the behavioral challenges of his daughter, has voluntarily stepped back from business and family responsibilities while his wife coordinates treatment.
There was even a quote attributed to Graham.
I know Sloane will do what is best for Maisie.
He had never said it.
He never would have.
At the bottom of the draft was a scheduled publication time.

1:00 p.m. on his wedding day.
Forty-five minutes after Maisie was supposed to disappear into the van.
