"Step away from my daughter."

My voice came out low enough that Evelyn actually stopped.

Lily lay beneath a thin pink hospital blanket with an IV in her arm and oxygen beneath her nose.

Three hours earlier, my eight-year-old daughter had stopped breathing at Evelyn Hart's charity luncheon.

Now Evelyn stood beside the bed in a plum-colored suit, silver hair perfect, expression almost annoyed.

"You are upsetting her," she said.

"No. You are leaving."

She ignored me and leaned toward Lily.

"If anyone asks what happened, sweetheart, tell them your father forgot your medicine."

My stomach turned cold.

Lily opened her eyes.

"I saw you."

Evelyn froze.

"What did you say?"

"I saw you switch the dessert plates."

Silence.

"You were confused."

"No."

Lily swallowed.

"I was recording Dad a message."

Evelyn's face changed.

Before the luncheon, Lily had been using her smartwatch to record a voice note about the speech she was nervous to give.

The recording kept running.

It captured Evelyn telling a server to move the peanut-free dessert.

It captured the rustle of my coat.

And it captured a whisper.

"Once he loses custody, the trust will finally be under our control."

Evelyn stared at Lily.

"That proves nothing."

A woman stepped from behind the privacy curtain.

Detective Sarah Collins.

"We'll let a judge decide that."

Evelyn turned toward the door.

A uniformed officer blocked it.

Collins held up an evidence bag.

Inside was Lily's missing EpiPen.

"We recovered this from your car."

Evelyn's face lost color.

"You planted that."

"No."

Collins nodded toward the officer.

"Evelyn Hart, you are under arrest on suspicion of child endangerment, theft of emergency medication, and evidence tampering."

Evelyn started shouting about judges, hospital executives, and donors.

Lily did not look at her.

She reached for my hand.

"Is it over, Dad?"

I wanted to say yes.

Collins closed the door after Evelyn was removed.

Then she placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Inside was a petition asking the court to remove me as trustee of Lily's inheritance.

The trust held nearly three million dollars left by my late wife, Anna.

The filing date was two weeks before the luncheon.

Before the allergic reaction.

Before anyone had a reason to question my parenting.

At the bottom was Evelyn's signature.

Beside it was another.

Michael Hart.

My younger brother.

The same man who lived in my guest room.

The same man who picked Lily up from school.

The same man who knew exactly where I kept her emergency medication.

Then my phone rang.

Michael.

Collins looked at me.

"Answer it."

I put him on speaker.

"Daniel," Michael said calmly. "I heard something happened to Lily."

I looked at my daughter.

Then he asked:

"Did the doctors find the second injector?"

Detective Collins and I looked at each other.

Michael had just told us he knew there should have been two.
