Chapter 12 - THE OTHER SON

My father had another son.
Not Michael.
A third child.
Born after Margaret died.
Name:
Nathan Pierce.
Mother:
A paralegal at Charles Hart's law firm.
Robert never publicly acknowledged him.
Charles paid support through Hart Legacy.
Peter managed the payments.
Nathan grew up knowing exactly who his father was.
Why had no one mentioned him?
Because he disappeared into another surname.
Then I remembered a man from Evelyn's luncheon.
Security contractor.
Detective Collins pulled vendor records.
Nathan Pierce owned the security company hired for the event.
He had access to camera systems.
Evelyn's car.
"Was he part of the plan?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"I hired his company because Peter recommended them."
"Did you know who he was?"
"Not until last month."
"Michael?"
"He found out."
That explained the station attack.
Nathan could have followed Michael.
Rachel traced another secret.
Robert's will left nothing to Nathan.
Michael received what I thought was a brother's share.
Nathan got zero.
Hart Family Holdings had quietly paid him for years.
Then payments stopped when Evelyn gained control.
Nathan blamed everyone.
Margaret.
Michael.
Anna's estate.
He believed our families had spent thirty years distributing money around him while hiding his name.
The same resentment Evelyn used on Michael existed in Nathan too.
Except nobody controlled Nathan.
Then police searched his office.
They found copied Hart archives.
Photos of Evelyn.
Michael.
Peter.
Lily.
Margaret estate - stolen.
Michael - favored.
Daniel - legitimate.
Anna - inherited.
Lily - protected.
Nathan - erased.
This was not a financial plan.
It was grievance turned into a map.
Then investigators found Peter's blood on a jacket in Nathan's office.
Michael's too.
Nathan had attacked both men.
Why Peter?
Because Peter helped bury his existence.
Why Michael?
Because Michael had the tape and, in Nathan's mind, the inheritance.
Then Collins found one final file.
A copy of Evelyn's custody petition.
Nathan had it before the luncheon.
The service camera logs answered.
Six minutes before Lily ate the dessert, Nathan's security credentials disabled the ballroom camera covering my table.
Only one other camera caught Evelyn switching the plates.
Nathan had tried to erase the clearest video.
He was not merely taking revenge on old men.
He had helped create the opportunity for Lily's medical emergency.
Then his phone pinged a tower.
May you like
Less than two miles from the hospital.
He was still nearby.
