Chapter 14 - WHAT EVELYN FINALLY ADMITTED

Evelyn stopped bargaining when confronted with the recording.
She asked for water.
Then said:
"I did not kill Margaret."
Detective Collins replied:
"Nobody asked that."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Margaret planned to leave with Michael.
Robert refused to leave his wife.
Charles wanted the scandal buried.
Evelyn wanted Michael kept inside the family where she could still see him.
They all told themselves they were protecting a baby.
Really, they were protecting adults from consequences.
The night Margaret died, she drank wine.
Then argued with Robert.
Robert left.
Evelyn stayed.
Margaret threatened to expose Charles's estate manipulations and Robert's affair.
Evelyn grabbed the pill bottle.
Margaret fell and struck her head on a table.
Evelyn panicked and left.
"When did you call for help?" Collins asked.
Evelyn did not answer.
"You left her."
"She was awake."
"For how long?"
"I don't know."
Peter found her later.
By then she was unconscious.
Charles ordered the scene cleaned up.
The death became overdose.
Could faster help have saved her?
A medical expert would have to decide.
But Evelyn had finally admitted abandoning an injured woman to protect a family secret.
Then Collins asked:
"Why target Lily?"
Evelyn looked at me.
"Because Anna's trust became symbolic."
"Symbolic?"
"Everything went to the children who fit."
"Michael lost his mother. Nathan lost his father. Anna got the clean life. Then Lily got the money."
"So you decided to take it from an eight-year-old?"
"I decided to correct what Charles did."
"No."
"You decided Lily should pay for crimes committed before she was born."
Evelyn started crying.
Then she admitted the luncheon plan.
A missing injector.
A prepared custody filing.
She claimed she did not intend anaphylaxis.
She insisted she thought Lily would only develop a rash.
That was not how severe allergies worked.
Michael removed the first injector.
Evelyn removed the second.
Nathan disabled the camera.
Each person could tell himself someone else controlled the danger.
That was how they almost killed my daughter.
Then Collins asked:
"Where is Nathan?"
Evelyn looked down.
"He wanted the Hart archive money."
"What money?"
Charles had hidden an offshore account decades earlier.
Part of Margaret's estate.
Part company money.
Part secret payments for Nathan.
Evelyn believed the account now held more than five million dollars.
Access required two old recovery keys.
Peter had one.
Evelyn had the other.
Nathan attacked Peter for his key.
Then targeted Michael because he thought Michael had Evelyn's.
Evelyn's key was hidden in the one place she trusted no one to search.
Inside the backing of Lily's framed photograph on her office desk.
Police recovered it.
Then Rachel checked the account.
Five point four million dollars.
Nathan had spent weeks helping Evelyn target Lily partly because he wanted access to the same hidden money.
The family secret had become a feeding ground.
Then Collins's radio crackled.
Nathan had been found at Hart Legacy Advisors.

He was inside the old archive.
And the building was on fire.
