Chapter 5 - CHARLES HART

Charles Hart died before Anna did.
Heart attack.
Private funeral.
Closed casket because of "medical complications."
I never questioned it.
Why would I?
He had been my father-in-law.
Rachel pulled the old estate file.
His death certificate was valid.
Hospital record valid.
Burial record valid.
Then Detective Collins asked:
"Who identified the body?"
Evelyn.
That made the room feel colder.
I told myself not to invent a conspiracy because we had found fraud.
The false trust amendment used a template from Charles's old estate-planning firm.
That was the real connection.
The document metadata showed it had been created on a computer registered to Hart Legacy Advisors.
A family office Charles founded decades earlier.
Managed now by a man named Peter Vale.
I knew Peter.
Every Christmas, he sent Lily a book.
He called himself "Uncle Peter" even though he was not related.
He had managed Charles's finances.
Then portions of Lily's trust before I moved most assets to a national bank.
Collins asked:
"Did Peter resent losing control of the trust?"
"I don't know."
Rachel said:
"He lost almost three million in assets under management."
We subpoenaed records.
Peter had communicated with Evelyn constantly.
He also communicated with Michael.
Meetings at Hart Family Holdings.
From Peter to Michael:
Your father would have expected you to protect the Hart legacy.
"My father?"
Michael and I shared a father.
Robert Hale.
Rachel stared at the email.
"Maybe Peter meant father figuratively."
Detective Collins did not look convinced.
Then Lily woke.
She heard enough adult voices to know something was wrong.
"Is Uncle Michael bad?"
"I don't know everything yet."
"He took my pen."
"What pen?"
"The medicine pen."
"When?"
"At Grandma's house before."
Two months earlier, Michael had picked her up from school and taken her to Evelyn's.
He asked to see her EpiPen.
He said he wanted to check the expiration date.
Then he put it in his coat.
Lily thought he gave it back.
"Did anything else happen?"
"Grandma made me practice."
"Practice what?"
"Calling 911."
That sounded responsible until Lily added:
"But she said I had to say, 'Dad forgot my medicine.'"
They had coached an eight-year-old for the emergency they planned to create.
Then Lily whispered:
"Uncle Michael said Grandma would be my new mommy if you went away."
I looked at Collins.
May you like
Michael was not helping Evelyn gain custody.
He was helping build a replacement family.
