Chapter 9 - THE BURNED FILE

Peter survived.
Smoke inhalation.
Head injury.
Someone struck him before setting the small archive fire.
The building's suppression system stopped it.
Most files survived.
The camera system did not.
It had been disabled for eleven minutes.
Peter.
Evelyn.
And, through an old master credential, Michael.
Collins asked me:
"Who benefits if Peter stays quiet?"
Then forensic technicians recovered fragments from the burned box.
MARGARET HART - ESTATE.
One document survived almost completely.
Margaret named Michael as heir.
If Michael died before age thirty, the assets went to Anna.
She had been a child at the time.
Why would Margaret name her niece?
A handwritten letter explained.
Anna is the only one in this family Charles cannot control yet.
Margaret had not trusted Evelyn.
Not Charles.
Not Peter.
She trusted a little girl.
After Margaret died, that beneficiary structure should have protected Michael.
Instead, her assets went into Hart Family Holdings.
Peter regained consciousness and asked for Collins.
Charles ordered the beneficiary form destroyed.
Peter refused.
Evelyn found another lawyer.
A replacement document appeared.
Michael's inheritance vanished into the family company.
"Did Evelyn know?" Collins asked.
Peter laughed weakly.
"She arranged it."
"Why?"
"She said Michael would be raised by Robert and needed nothing from the Harts."
The aunt who later told Michael his inheritance had been stolen from him was the same woman who helped steal it.
Then Peter said something worse.
Years later, Evelyn began feeding Michael selected pieces of the truth.
Just enough to make him angry.
She told him Margaret had left money.
She told him Anna had benefited from Hart wealth.
She never told him she redirected the estate herself.
Michael grew up believing Anna's branch of the family profited from his mother's death.
Then Anna died and Lily inherited three million dollars.
To Michael, it looked like history repeating.
Peter whispered:
"Evelyn built resentment into him."
Collins asked:
"Why?"
"Because Michael was useful."
My brother had spent years thinking Evelyn was the only adult who respected his secret identity.
In reality, she had been shaping him.
Then Peter admitted one final fact.
Margaret did not overdose accidentally.
He had seen the toxicology report before it was amended.
The medication levels were inconsistent with accidental use.
"Who changed the report?"
"Charles."
"Who was with Margaret?"
"Evelyn."
"Did Evelyn kill her?"
Peter closed his eyes.
"I don't know."
Then Collins received another call.
Michael had been located.
Not arrested.
Hospitalized.
Someone had stabbed him in a train-station parking garage.

Before losing consciousness, he told paramedics one thing:
"Evelyn knows I found the original tape."
