Chapter 13 - THE HOSPITAL LOCKDOWN

Detective Collins ordered hospital security to lock down Lily's floor.
I felt the room shrink.
"Why would Nathan come here?"
Michael's phone.
The original tape.
Evelyn.
Or Lily.
Lily noticed the officers first.
"Are we in trouble?"
"No."
"Then why are police here?"
"They're making sure nobody bothers you."
Then the fire alarm went off.
Hospital staff frowned.
A minute later, the lights flickered.
Backup systems came on immediately.
Collins's radio erupted.
A man wearing maintenance clothing had entered a restricted electrical room.
Security found the uniform abandoned.
Nathan was inside.
Police began clearing corridors.
I stood between Lily and the door, absurdly aware that I had spent two years believing paperwork was the greatest threat to my family.
Then the intercom announced a temporary shelter-in-place.
Lily started crying.
"You're safe."
I did not know if that was true.
"Daniel?"
Michael.
I opened the door only after an officer confirmed him.
He had been moved from another floor under guard.
"Why are you here?"
"Nathan texted me."
He showed Collins.
COME GET THE TAPE OR I TELL LILY WHAT YOUR FATHER DID.
Collins frowned.
"He thinks you have it."
Michael nodded.
"Good."
"What?"
"If he thinks I have it, he may come to me."
"No."
Michael looked at me.
"I owe her."
"You don't get to pay debt by creating another dangerous situation."
That was the first time I saw him understand what accountability actually required.
Except Collins stared at her badge.
The woman saw the stare and ran.
Not Nathan.
She carried a phone linked to Nathan's number.
Then the real move came from the parking garage.
An officer found Evelyn's impounded vehicle access key had been duplicated.
Nathan entered the police evidence holding lot earlier that afternoon.
He had taken something from her car before it was fully processed.
Collins called evidence.
Lily's smartwatch charger case.
The original voice recording had already been copied.
Then Lily whispered:
"My watch has another message."
"What message?"
She had recorded more than the luncheon.
Weeks earlier, at Evelyn's house, she accidentally recorded Michael and Evelyn arguing.
The file remained locally stored.
Police had copied the luncheon audio, not every file.
Nathan may have known.
Lily's watch was in the hospital drawer.
Collins opened the device.
One unsent recording.
Michael:
"Tell me what really happened to my mom."
Evelyn:
"Ask Robert why he left her on the floor."
My father again.
Nathan.
"I already know."
He had been in Evelyn's house weeks before the luncheon.
He had confronted them both.
May you like
And Evelyn had lied when she said she learned who he was only last month.
She had known Nathan long before the charity event.
